Laurie Collingwood - Viola
Laurie began studying violin at the age of 5. At the age of 8, Laurie was admitted to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama junior department, where he changed his focus to the viola. Two years later, he took up a place at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh, continuing his studies with Jimmy Durrant. During his school career Laurie played and toured with both the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and as principal viola with the National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland.
In 2006, Laurie began his studies at Trinity College of Music, studying viola with Stephen Tees and Matthew Jones. During his time at Trinity he founded the Halcyon Quartet, who during their college years, were awarded the Trinity Cavatina Prize for chamber music, the John Barbarolli Prize, the Cavatina Intercollegiate String Quartet Competition Audience Prize and the Sir John Thompson Scholarship for String Quartet.
As an orchestral and chamber music player, Laurie has performed around the U.K and Europe. He has participated in masterclasses with Bernard Greenhouse and the Wihan, Allegri and Endellion String Quartets. As a recitalist, Laurie enjoys demonstrating the versatility of the viola through contemporary works, jazz arrangements and the often overlooked viola repertoire.
